Mercury’s days are long and it’s years are short. In other words, it takes the planet a very long time (59 Earth days) to rotate on its axis and a very short time (88 Earth days) to travel around the Sun. As it nears perihelion, its closest point to the Sun, the planet’s travel speed increases and becomes faster than its rotational speed. Depending on where you stand, the Sun appears to set, rise and set again. More interplanetary travel tips coming soon - so stay tuned for my weekly #stellarsnippet !! 📷: nasa.gov #solarsystemambassador #solarsystem #Mercury #planet #sunset #sun #orbit #space #science #NASA #astronomy #cosmos #funfact #lookupandgetlost

NGC 6188: The Dragons of Ara  Image Credit & Copyright: Tian Lee Explanation: Dark shapes with bright edges winging their way through dusty #NGC6188 are tens of light-years long. The emission #nebula is found near the edge of an otherwise dark large molecular cloud in the southern  #constellation #Ara, about 4,000 light-years away. Born in that region only a few million years ago, the massive young stars of the embedded Ara OB1 association sculpt the fantastic shapes and power the nebular glow with stellar winds and intense ultraviolet radiation. The recent star formation itself was likely triggered by winds and #supernova explosions, from previous generations of massive stars, that swept up and compressed the molecular gas. With image data from the #Chilescope #Observatory, a false-color  #Hubble palette was used to create this gorgeous wide-field image and shows emission from sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in red, green, and blue hues. The field of view spans about four full Moons, corresponding to about 150 light years at the estimated distance of NGC 6188. #Astronomy #TheDernTruth #afroastronomy #science #ProfessorKG #galaxy #galaxio #SolarSystemAmbassadorLA #SolarSystemAmbassador #astronomo

Get ready for another explorer, Mars! 🔴🛰 • • • After a 205-day journey that began on May 5, NASA& #039;s InSight mission will touch down on Mars on Nov. 26, just before 3 p.m. EST (12 p.m. PST). InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is a robotic Mars lander designed to explore and study the "inner space" of Mars: its crust, mantle, and core. • • • Studying Mars& #039; interior structure answers key questions about the early formation of rocky planets in our inner solar system - Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars - more than 4 billion years ago, as well as rocky exoplanets. InSight also measures tectonic activity and meteorite impacts on Mars today. Once on Mars, InSight’s solar panels will unfurl within a few hours of touchdown. • • • These images show the landing site for InSight, in relation to landing sites for seven previous missions, is shown on a topographic map of Mars, along with an artists rendition of the lander on Mars’ surface. Smooth, flat ground dominates InSight& #039;s landing ellipse in the Elysium Planitia region of Mars. The ellipse is about 81 miles (130 kilometers) long, generally west to east, and about 17 miles (27 kilometers) wide, covering the area where the spacecraft has about a 99 percent chance of landing. Before the Kepler Space Telescope, planets orbiting other stars were merely theory. By observing only a small region of the sky, it discovered 2,600+ exoplanets in our galaxy, with 2,000+ more to be confirmed. Hundreds of these exoplanets are Earth sized, and tens of these are orbiting within their stars’ habitable zones - making them potentially capable of harboring life as we know it. After nine years with no fuel left, the telescope has retired and will remain in safe orbit around the Sun, passing the planet hunting torch onto TESS - the next space telescope to search for new worlds. Thank you Kepler Mission for opening our eyes to the abundance and diversity of the planets around us! Catch me next week for another #stellarsnippet !! 📷: nasa.gov #solarsystemambassador #Kepler #telescope #space #science #searchforlife #NASA #news #astronomy #astrophysics #exoplanet #planet #cosmos #solarsystem

Cygnus Shell Supernova Remnant W63  Image Credit & Copyright: J-P Metsavainio (Astro Anarchy) Explanation: The ghost of a long-dead star, the W63 supernova remnant shines like a faint cosmic smoke-ring along the plane of the Milky Way galaxy toward the northernconstellation Cygnus the swan. Its wraithlike appearance is traced against the region& #039;srich complex of interstellar clouds and dust by an eerie blue glow. Spanning over four full moons on the sky, the beautiful image is a telescopic mosaic in twelve panels that combines 100 hours of exposure time using narrow band filters. It shows characteristic light from ionized atoms of sulfur, hydrogen and oxygen in red, green, and blue hues. Likely over 5,000 light-years away, the visible part of the still expanding shell supernova remnant is around 150 light-years in diameter. So far no source has been identified as with the remains of W63& #039;s original star. The ESA shared the new image from the BepiColombo #spacecraft over the weekend. It strongly resembles a selfie, as it captures parts of the spacecraft against the black abyss of space. The picture shows one of its extended solar arrays on the right side, while the left side of the picture shows the layered insulation of one of its sun sensors. It was delivered to space by the Ariane 6 rocket that successfully lifted off on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.⠀

Meteor, Comet, and Seagull (Nebula) ... Image Credit & Copyright: Takao Sambommatsu Explanation: A #meteor, a #comet, and a photogenic #nebula have all been captured in this single image. The closest and most fleeting is the streaking meteor on the upper right -- it was visible for less than a second. The meteor, which disintegrated in Earth& #039;s #atmosphere, was likely a small bit of debris from thenucleus of Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, coincidentally the comet captured in the same image. Comet 21P, pictured across the inner #SolarSystem from #Earth, is distinctive for its long dust tail spread horizontally across the image center. This comet has been visible with binoculars for the past few months but is now fading as it heads back out to the orbit of #Jupiter. Farthest out at 3,500 light years distant is the IC 2177, the  #SeagullNebula, visible on the left. The comparatively vast Seagull Nebula, with a wingspan on order 250 light-years, will likely remain visible for hundreds of thousands of years. Long exposures, taken about two weeks ago from Iwaki-City in  #Japan, were combined to capture the image& #039;s faintest elements. You, too, could see a meteor like this -- and perhaps sooner than you might think: tonight is the peak of the  #Orionids meteor shower. #TheDernTruth #SolarSystemAmbassadorLA #MilkyWay #NASA #SolarSystemAmbassador

Summer to Winter Milky Way ... Image Credit & Copyright: Dong Han Explanation: Taken near local midnight, this autumn night& #039;s panorama follows the arch of the #MilkyWay across the northern horizon from the High Fens, Eifel Nature Park at the border of Belgium and Germany. Shift your gaze across the wetlands from west to east (left to right) and you can watch stars once more prominent in northern summer give way to those that will soon dominate northern winter nights. Setting, wanderer #Mars is brightest at the far left, still shinning against almost overwhelming city lights along the southwestern horizon. Bright stars #Altair, #Deneb, and #Vega form the northern sky& #039;s summer triangle, straddling the Milky Way left of center. Part of the winter hexagon  #Capella and #Aldebaran, along with the beautiful #Pleiades star cluster shine across the northeastern sky. The line-of-sight along the hikers boardwalk leads almost directly toward the #BigDipper, an all season asterism from these northern latitudes. Follow the #Big Dipper& #039;s pointer stars to #Polaris and the north celestial pole nearly centered above it.  #Andromeda, the other large galaxy in the skyscape, is near the top of the frame. #Astronomy #SolarSystemAmbassadorLA #SolarSystemAmbassador #Archeoastronomy #TheDernTruth #AfroAstronomy #STEM #Ethnoastronomy #SolarSystem #LookUp

The Tal Qadi Stone ... It was once claimed of Malta that (with the exception of Mnajdra), & #039;There are no significant astronomical alignments, they are all inward facing& #039;. However, in the light of new research which shows a clear predominance for the orientation of most temples to the winter solstice, and other other obvious discrepancies to this sweeping generalisation, this statement can no longer to be considered valid. It seems, as with nearly all megalithic structures, that the builders had a preference for orientating their structures towards key moments of the #celestial cycles. So frequent is this association that it becomes tempting to suggest that the original function of the temples may have even been to mark these events. The best evidence that the inhabitants of #Malta were interested in astronomy come in the form of discoveries of everyday objects such as this broken limestone slab from the Tal-Qadi Temple which has what certainly appears to be a representation of the heavens, showing the moon  and stars as well as a number of radiating lines dividing it into quadrants, and the solar-wheel from a pottery shard found in Hagar Qim temple. With regards the temples themselves, at  #Mnajdra in particular, there are several significant alignments to mark moments of the solar year. The #TalQadi stone is believed to have once been a disc. A projection shows that the sky was divided into sixteen sections. The & #039;Solar-wheel& #039; above is divided into eight sections. It is now considered probable that most, if not all of the large prehistoric temples on Malta would have originally been covered over. Combined with an invariable orientation of the passages to either the #equinoxes or the #solstices, the builders would have been able to use the temples as a means of measuring the solar year exactly (in the same way as the builders of the Irish and Scottish Passage-mounds did). credit :ancient-wisdom.com #Astronomy #SolarSystemAmbassadorLA #SolarSystemAmbassador #Archeoastronomy #TheDernTruth #AfroAstronomy #STEM #Ethnoastronomy #SolarSystem #LookUp

Night Sky Tour tomorrow, 10/13 from 7:30- 11:30 @josephinesculpturepark. We’ll learn all about Mars and then get to do some observing through some of the ‘scopes you see here! Maybe, if we get a big enough crowd and we all yell #WakeUpOppy loud enough we can rouse the intrepid Opportunity rover from her slumber! #astronomy #kentucky #frankfort #NASA #solarsystemambassador #mars #telescope #marsrover

What is the largest moon in our solar system? Ganymede is Jupiter’s largest moon and also the largest moon in the solar system and the only moon with its own magnetic field. #SolarSystemAmbassador

Mars does not have a global magnetic field as Earth. On September 11, 2017 a massive solar storm hit the red planet causing a global Aurora. NASA scientists are studying solar storms at Mars to better understand the space weather effects on atmospheric loss over time and for future human exploration. #solarsystemambassador #nasa #mars #spaceweather 📸 @nasa

The Solar System Ambassadors have reached an amazing milestone within our communities. We have conducted 40,000 events reaching over 9 million people. I’m extremely humble to be going onto my third year as an SSA for #mobilealabama #somobile Also, This amazing milestone was sent to the White House!!!!!!! #solarsystemambassador #nasa #jpl

Happy 15th birthday, Spitzer! The Spitzer Space Telescope is an infrared space telescope launched on August 25, 2003, the last in NASA’s Great Observatories Program. Spitzer uses three instruments to get some of the stunning photos we see today: the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), an imaging camera, designed to detect light at near and mid-infrared wavelengths; the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), which provides both high and low resolution spectroscopy; the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS), another imaging camera that detects light in the far infrared. None of this would be possible without the Cryostat, which keeps Spitzer cold, allowing the scope to look for faint radiation from objects in our universe. . Given a 5 year mission, the Spitzer Space Telescope has much surpassed that, most recently used to discover 5 of 7 planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system. And now with @nasa’s newest app, NASA Selfies, you can place yourself at the center of the action! Here are some of the images snapped by Spitzer:(📷 credit: @nasajpl) Images: Triangulum Galaxy NGC 3226, NGC 3227 Helix Nebula VV 340 IRAS 19340+2016, IRAS 19343+2026 Peony Nebula • • • • • • • #kuiperkatsastronomy #solarsystemambassador #spitzer #spitzerspacetelescope #scicomm

I was so blessed today for my first table to be this amazing sweet couple. The most amazing part about this couple is his wife, Dianne Martin. She was the last NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador for Mobile before I was chosen in 2016 ending the 7 year hiatus for an ambassador representing the gulf. #blessed #nasa #jpl #solarsystemambassador

The beginning of my day on Campus at #JPL for #ExploreJPL in the #MarsYard! I would end up assigned to volunteer at the fun crawling 8-wheel rover prototype station! Now being my first year eligible to staff as a #SolarSystemAmbassador volunteer at the Explore JPL event, I was overwhelmed with euphoria! I don’t think I stopped smiling once! I was able to get more photos later with my real camera. I’ll post those later. I’m so glad I got to meet some fellow SSAs and my director and some famous voices behind our Teleconference calls! #ExploreJPL2018
